It’s the giving season, and as presents are exchanged and good cheer fills the air many people are looking for a way to give back. Financial professional Mindy McIntosh talks with WSMH FOX66 about how we can get in the giving spirit without breaking the bank.
Ways to Give Back
Giving to Others – Make a holiday budget and write out everyone you want to get a gift for and how much you are able to spend. Remember to include things like white elephant gifts or party supplies if you plan on having people over. Gathering all of your close friends at one time can save on gifts and evenings out visiting them all individually over the holiday season. Download our holiday budget worksheet here.
Giving to Charity – When looking for a charity, do your research. Look at their websites to see if they are in search of monetary donations or supplies. Make it a fun family activity and pick out a charity together or go shopping together for the supplies you want to donate. Instead of money, donate your time to take an afternoon or evening and volunteer at a soup kitchen or packing holiday boxes for soldiers overseas.
Giving to Yourself – Take the time to start an emergency fund. Eventually, you will want between 3-6 months’ worth of expenses on hand. Or you can increase your 401(k) contributions to start saving more for retirement. Mark off time on your calendar and do the things you enjoy like reading or meditating.
